Of the millions of people who have played the game, a staggeringly small number could wilfully hit the ball where they aimed.By all accounts, the number is two. Who were they?
Most hard core golfers would quickly identify Ben Hogan. Students of the game will recognize the other golfer’s name as Moe Norman. Moe is a legend among three generations of tour players. A reclusive Canadian Tour pro, Moe Norman rarely left his home country because of acute feeling of insecurity, but nevertheless made a name for himself among the golfing fraternity.
I have bucket loads of video and film clips of Ben Hogan, but never saw him live. I saw Moe play in the prime of his career in the 1960’s and a good deal later on when he travelled the country giving clinics sponsored by Titleist.
For two days I was in Moe’s group during a tournament in Ontario because I was looping for Alvie Thompson, an accomplished Canadian Tour player in the 1960’s and 70’s.
What set these two apart from virtually all their peers? What set them apart?
But just think of how rare this skill is. Of the legions of folks who have played the game,only these two gentlemen could point and hit it to that spot.
Regrettably, the mainsteam golfing community never really got to know Moe and that distance was further magnified by the way he was depicted in the press. His frequent feuding with the RCGA, the ruling body of golf in Canada, did not enhance his image or endear him to the public.Few were interested in what Moe had to say about the golf swing given the fact that he looked so unorthodox over the ball. Because Moe spoke in riddle and repeated himself habitually, few bothered to try to examine what he was trying to say. Despite his prodigous talent as a player, it was exceedingly rare that anyone would take the time with Moe to unlock the secrets of his incredible swing.The best you could get were bits and pieces of insight but nothing comprehensive bordering on a methodology.
New theories now abound from an assortment of golf lab rats who are now trying to re-engineer the magic of Moe’s swing. This has spawned the emergence of a number of competing “swing theories”, each purporting to have uncovered the Da Vinci Code that is Moe’s swing . The claims of offering golfing nirvana based on Moe’s swing have been greatly exaggerated and are, frankly, disappointing.
Unlike what is taught today, the actual Moe Norman swing was powerful and had a distinct sound coming off the clubface. The modern swing theories which purport to capture the essence of Moe’s swing have failed to reproduce for the average player the power of the man through the ball . I, like others, have experimented with the new theories and abandoned them after experiencing a marked lack of distance.

In my youth, I caddied on one of the minor pro tours. You will remember that I once was a caddy in Moe’s group at a pro tournament. Beyond being a reclusive individual, Moe exhibited the patience of a toddler when it came to the ponderous pace of tournament golf. He compensated by wandering about chatting to himself when waiting for those ahead to hit or putt out. He would often drop 5 or 6 balls into a bunker on a just played hole and spank them out to keep himself amused. Clearly he needed to find compensatory activities to dissipate the wealth of energy he exhibited.
The overlay of myth has now come to shroud the actual behaviour of Moe during his tournament playing days. The stories are certainly more suspect when they come from former caddies! The anecdotes and recollections might be fictional at best but what is factual is the man was a ball striking machine. Never have I witnessed a player long past his prime who seemed to have lost so very little of his exquisite talent.

I saw up close and personal just how unerringly straight Moe Norman was . I volunteered to shag balls (in the era before motorized ball pickers) for Moe during a local exhibition.So oblivious was the golfing public to the genius of the man, he only drew a handful of people to the clinic. With monotonous regularity, each ball he hit about one bounce away from us.He simply motioned to back us up to a new position when he changed clubs and the balls would begin to rain down with predictable monotony. Words do no justice in trying to capture the enormity of his skill.

What a divide separates these two golfing legends. Where one struggled to communicate, the other failed to communicate. One man suffered from a failure to connect, the other happily drew a steel curtain around himself.It seems each month some one new comes out of the shadows proclaiming that he has uncovered the mystery that is Hogan. Unless something akin to the Dead Sea Scrolls is unearthed, it is unlikely that we will ever truly know what made Hogan great.
Though we can demonstate the Hogan swing frame by frame, we cannot discern its inner workings. Many proclaim to be teaching Hogan, but few take them seriously. It is likely that Hogan would not be dissatisfied with the current state of affairs . Like an Eastern mystic, he advised those who sought his knowledge to find it themselves by digging it out of the dirt. If Hogan was teaching you to garden, he’d throw you a rake.
Hogan viewed life as antagonistic to his interests. To be fair, Hogan did not search out these qualities in others.He was a pro golfer you admired but didn’t love.So has the perfect golf swing eluded us?
The perfect swing exists . However,you can’t do it; although you can come perilously close to mastering it!
What do we mean? Well, without understanding what the human body can and does do, you are at a disadvantage. Your comprehension of this puzzle is aided by an understanding of both human physiology and the laws of physics. Do I need to be a rocket scientist!

There isn’t any barrier to you learning and mastering a potent golf swing. Most have demonstrated a high degree of competence by the time they finish two buckets of balls.
